Chaga-mushroom (Inonotus Obliquus), this mushroom grows on birch trees, and has been used as an adaptogen,therapeutically for centuries in Russia.
Chaga-mushroom is a highly prized medicinal fungus that has been used in Siberian folk medicine as a cleansing and disinfecting substance, often used to treat stomach discomforts. It is a parasitic fungus growing on birch, alder, beech and other hardwood trees throughout North America and Europe. The fungus produces a thick mass on the trunks of trees sometimes measuring up to 40 cm thick and 1.5 meters in length. Folk medicine practitioners have traditionally removed Chaga-mushroom masses from the trees and prepared teas and other decoctions for the treatment of diseases ranging from stomach diseases, intestinal worms, liver and heart ailments and cancers. More recent pharmacological studies using Chaga in Poland, Russia, and the U.S.A. have shown anti-tumor activity related to the mammary glands and female sexual organs. Much of this research was carried out in Finland by researchers at the School of Pharmacy, University of Helsinki. Chaga-mushroom most active compound, inotodiol, has shown activity against influenza viruses A and B, and various cancer cells. Studies in Japan have also confirmed antiviral activity, (inhibition of the protease enzyme of HIV-1). Sorbus Aucuparia Antiscorbutic; Aperient; Astringent; Diuretic; Laxative.The berries of this tree have been found to have anti-scorbutic properties, which work as a prevention to Vitamin C deficiency. The bark is astringent, it is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and as a vaginal injection for leucorrhoea etc. The fruit is antiscorbutic and astringent. It is normally used as a jam or an infusion to treat diarrhoea and haemorrhoids. An infusion can also be used as a gargle for sore throats and as a wash to treat haemorrhoids and excessive vaginal discharge. The seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides which, in reaction with water, produce the extremely toxic prussic acid. In small quantities this acts as a stimulant to the respiratory system but in larger doses can cause respiratory failure and death. It is therefore best to remove the seeds when using the fruit medicinally or as a food. Both the flowers and the fruit are aperient, mildly diuretic, laxative and emmenagogue. An infusion is used in the treatment of painful menstruation, constipation and kidney disorders
