Although the plant's weight loss supplement was uncovered recently, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert have been eating it for a very long time.

The Bushmen, who live off the land, would cut off part of the succulent stem and eat it to ward off hunger and thirst during nomadic hunting trips. They also used it for severe abdominal cramps, hemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion, hypertension and diabetes.

Hoodia tricks the brain into thinking that you are full. The chemical constituents works within the satiety center by releasing a molecule that is 10,000 times as active as glucose.

It goes to the mid-brain and makes those nerve cells feel satisfied. The hypothalamus receives this signal as an indication that enough food has been consumed and this in turn stunts the appetite.

At the end of 15 days, the group on had reduced their food intake by 1000 calories a day. Given the average daily diet is around 2200 calories, this was a stunning success.

After years of careful research, scientists isolated several compounds in this all-natural food that was responsible for dramatic weight loss, P57, which has been widely reported, is but one of several chemical compounds found in the succulent plant.

Not only was it proven completely safe, it contains no stimulates that could contribute to the jittery feeling associated with weight loss products of the last decade.
